The Shiva
Lingham is from the sacred Narmada River in Onkar Mandhata, one of India's seven
holy sites. Villagers gather this unique
Crypto-crystalline quartz (a form of
jasper with impurities) from shallow river beds.
A natural formation,
geologists theorize that the
iron oxide embedded in the stone was impregnated in
the river bed millions of years ago by a meteorite. Lingham, which describes
the egg-like shape, is also the sacred Sanskrit word for phallus. This
often-worshiped fertility stone is revered by Hindus as the
embodiment of Lord
Shiva. The stones are sometimes hand polished to balance their proportions. If
you remember the movie
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the Shiva is the
sacred stone they were searching for. Accessible only during the dry seasons,
these stones are collected from the river bed by only a few families who have
been trained to identify only the most special pieces.
In Tantra, the shape embodies
masculine energy, dynamic expression, and knowledge, the harmony or balance of
the soul that is
maintained within the hearts of all of us, the Light that
shines from within. The markings are named Yoni (sacred Sanskrit word for
vulva)
for the feminine energy, wisdom, and intuition, the seed which is
fertilized to manifest the creative power in the dance of the cosmos.
Together,
the female energy arouses the masculine urge to create. As such, the Tantric Lingham unifies the dualistic (male/female)
world into harmonious balance.
The ancient practice of Feng
Shui uses the sacred Shiva Lingham to direct the energy flow throughout one's
home. Place a Shiva Lingham

balance
the male and female polarities within the self, promoting inner harmony,
and are symbolic of the Divine Creative Manifestation.
Shiva Linghams are also

of enlightenment which facilitate the visionary
experience. The Shiva Lingham is a
physical body stone and nurtures the second chakra. The colors of brown and red
increase the connection with
Shiva (God of Creation) and Kali (Goddess of
Destruction), and raises and grounds the kundalini energy, promoting grounding
into one’s incarnation and the body. The stone also helps facilitate the union
of body and soul and the union of male and female. The quartz
composition
(along with basalt and agate) and the shape make them powerful energy generators
appropriate for healing and unique
as tools for
meditation and cleansing.
